Your instructions

912 of 4,000 characters. Fits ChatBento's Instructions box.

Paste this into your chatbot's instructions (in ChatBento: your chatbot, then Settings, then Instructions). Facts like prices and hours belong on your website or in Q&As, not here.

How to use the instructions generator

  1. Pick your business. There are presets for 40 trades. Each one fills in what that trade's chatbot should pass to a person and the safety rules it needs, taken from our industry guides.
  2. Choose a tone. Friendly suits most small businesses, Reassuring suits clinics and emergency trades, and Short and direct suits software and busy stores.
  3. Untick anything that doesn't apply and add your own handoff topics, one per line.
  4. Add a next step and an offer if you have them, such as your booking page or a free first consultation.
  5. Copy the result into your chatbot's instructions, then ask it a few awkward questions to check it follows them.

Instructions are for behavior, not facts

The most common mistake is pasting prices, opening hours and policies into the instructions. It works until something changes and you forget to update the second copy. Keep facts on your website, where the chatbot reads them, and in Q&As for anything the site doesn't say. Use instructions for the things a page can't tell it: how to sound, when to stop and get a person, and what never to promise.

What good instructions cover

  • Tone, in one line. Long persona descriptions rarely change the answers much.
  • Handoff topics: bookings, refunds, complaints and anything about one customer's account. The chatbot can't see your systems, so these need a person.
  • Safety rules: what it must never do in your trade, such as diagnose, give legal advice or say a dish is allergy safe.
  • The next step, so a visitor who is ready to buy knows where to go.

For more examples and how to test them, read how to train an AI chatbot on your website, and see the system prompt entry in the glossary.

ChatBento already follows a set of built-in rules: it answers only from your content, never invents prices, policies or contact details, ignores visitors who try to change its role, and replies in the visitor's language. Your instructions add to those rules. It's free to start, with paid plans from $8 a month.

Questions. Answered.

What are chatbot instructions?

Instructions are standing rules you give an AI chatbot: the tone to use, what it should hand to a person, and what it must never say. Other tools call them a system prompt, custom instructions or a persona. They shape how the bot answers; the facts it answers from come from your website and Q&As.

Should I put prices and opening hours in the instructions?

No. Put facts on your website or add them as Q&As, so the chatbot finds them when someone asks and you only update them in one place. Instructions are for behavior: tone, handoff rules, safety rules and things to avoid.

Do these instructions work with other chatbots?

Yes. The text is plain language, so you can paste it into any AI chatbot's system prompt or custom instructions field. The character counter is set to ChatBento's limit of 4,000 characters.

Where do the safety rules come from?

From the industry guides on chatbento.com, which list what each trade's chatbot should hand to a person and must never do: no diagnosis for clinics, no legal advice for law firms, no rate quotes for mortgage brokers. They're general guidance, not legal advice, so check them against your own rules.

Is the instructions generator free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, with no sign-up and no limit, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
