Shopify Inbox vs an AI Chatbot: Which Does Your Store Need?
Shopify Inbox is free and now has its own AI agent that can check orders. What it does, where a separate AI chatbot still fits, and when to use both.

If your store runs only on Shopify and you're on an eligible plan, start with Shopify Inbox. It's free, your team can chat with shoppers from their phones, and its Inbox agent is an AI chatbot that answers from your catalog and policies and can check order status for signed-in customers. A separate AI chatbot makes sense when you have a website that isn't on Shopify, when your store can't use the Inbox agent, or when you want every unanswered question to arrive as a lead with the shopper's details.
I build ChatBento, which is one of those separate chatbots, so I have a reason to argue the other way. I won't, because for a lot of Shopify-only stores Inbox is the better first step. Here's what it does as of October 24, 2026, from Shopify's own documentation, and where it stops.
What Shopify Inbox actually does
Shopify Inbox is Shopify's chat app for your online store. Its App Store listing shows the price as Free. It has three layers.
1. Chat between your staff and shoppers
Your team answers from a desktop app, or the iOS and Android apps, according to Shopify's Inbox guide. In a conversation, staff can:
- see whether the shopper is new or returning, their location and time zone, and relevant order details
- see the cart subtotal and product quantities when the shopper has an active cart
- send product links, images and videos
- send discount codes that apply to the cart automatically when the shopper clicks them
- assign a conversation to one teammate, who then gets its notifications
ChatBento sees none of that shopping context, and that's a real advantage for Inbox when someone on your team is answering.
2. AI help for your staff
Suggested replies draft an answer from your store information for staff to edit and send. Shopify calls them a composing aid; they don't reply to shoppers on their own. They're only available in English, and your online store and admin must be in English too.
Instant answers are clickable questions in the chat window, each with a saved answer. You write them, or edit AI suggestions based on your store policies (English only). Up to 100 show to shoppers, and a default "Track my order" option asks shoppers to sign in.
3. The Inbox agent
The Inbox agent is the part that competes with an AI chatbot. It:
- answers product questions about details, availability and pricing, and suggests products
- checks the status of an existing order, after asking the shopper to sign in
- adds recommended items to the shopper's cart
- answers from your product catalog, policies, pages and Knowledge Base, and can cite web search results for reviews and ratings of a specific product
- replies in the language the shopper writes in
- hands the conversation to your staff, with the AI's context, when a shopper asks for a person or needs staff attention
You choose whether it handles all conversations or only those when your staff are unavailable. You shape its tone with a persona, and you can train it by rating its replies. Shopify notes that store facts belong in your store content or Knowledge Base, not in the persona.
Where Shopify Inbox stops
These limits come from the same Shopify pages, checked October 24, 2026:
- Plans. Shopify says Inbox is available only for stores on the Basic, Grow, Advanced or Shopify Plus plan.
- Customer accounts. The Inbox agent needs new customer accounts. On legacy customer accounts, conversations stay with your staff until you upgrade.
- Your storefront only. The agent operates only in your online store's chat widget. It won't answer on a site that isn't your Shopify storefront.
- When nobody is around. If staff aren't available for a handoff, the agent shares your store's sender email address so the shopper can email you. The shopper has to take that step; the chat doesn't collect their details for you.
- English-only AI drafting. Suggested replies and AI instant answer suggestions are English only. The agent itself replies in the shopper's language.
- Accuracy is on you. Shopify states that you're responsible for the accuracy of what the Inbox agent tells customers. That's true of every AI chatbot, including mine, and it's why what your chatbot should and shouldn't answer is worth deciding before you switch any of them on.
Where a separate AI chatbot fits
A website chatbot like ChatBento is a script you paste into any site. It reads your pages, your Q&As and any text you add, answers visitors in their language, and when it can't answer or someone asks for a person, it shows a short contact form (name, email, message) that's emailed to you. It can't look up orders, add to carts or take any action in your store, and it has no live chat inbox.
So it fits these cases:
- Your business has a site outside Shopify. Many stores have a main website on WordPress, Framer or Webflow, a separate site for wholesale or bookings, or a help site. Inbox can't run there. One chatbot can answer on all of them from the same content, and ChatBento's Standard plan includes 3 chatbots if you'd rather keep them separate.
- Your store can't use the Inbox agent. A plan outside Shopify's list, or legacy customer accounts you aren't ready to change, means no Inbox agent.
- You want every unanswered question as a lead. ChatBento hands off by collecting the visitor's name, email and message and emailing them to you, so you reply when you're free. If you sell high-value or custom products, that inbox of leads can matter more than live chat.
- You want the answers held to your own content. ChatBento only answers from what you gave it and never guesses prices, policies, dates or contact details; it says it doesn't know and offers the contact form. You can add your own instructions (up to 4,000 characters), such as "For order problems, ask for the order number first."
If none of these apply, Inbox does more for a Shopify-only store, at no cost.

Can you use both?
Yes, but not both on the same page. Two chat bubbles in two corners leave shoppers guessing which one to use, and two bots can answer the same question in different words. These are the combinations that work:
- Inbox on the store, a chatbot on your other site. The cleanest split. Shopify handles shopping and orders on the storefront; the chatbot handles your main website, with leads coming to your email.
- A chatbot now, Inbox later. If your store can't use the Inbox agent today, run a chatbot on the storefront, and revisit Inbox when you change plan or customer accounts. Remove one widget before you turn the other on.
Whichever tool answers, the content behind it is the same work: shipping and returns written as text, size charts that aren't only images, and the "no" answers written down.
A quick way to decide
- My store is on Basic, Grow, Advanced or Plus, with new customer accounts: try the Inbox agent first.
- Shoppers ask "where's my order?" a lot: Inbox, because it can check order status.
- Someone on my team can answer live chat from a phone: Inbox.
- I have a website or other pages outside Shopify: a website chatbot there.
- Nobody can watch chat, and I want unanswered questions as emailed leads: a website chatbot.
- I'm not eligible for the Inbox agent: a website chatbot.
If you go the chatbot route, the Shopify install guide takes about two minutes, and the ecommerce page shows what a store chatbot answers. ChatBento has a free plan, so you can test it on your store before deciding anything.
